- The most expensive wine ever sold is a bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite which sold at Christie's London in December 1985, for £105,000. The wine is reported to be from the cellar of the former US President Thomas Jefferson. However, this has since been reported to be fake by American industrialist William Koch.*
- Although many people find drinking alcohol makes them feel merry, it is in fact a depressant drug. It dulls the part of the brain that controls judgment, leading to a loss of inhibitions.
- Only 20% of the alcohol you swallow is absorbed by the stomach and when you consume alcohol you lose more water in your urine than you take in the drink itself.
- Alcohol might make you feel warmer, but it actually causes you to lose heat and reduces your core body temperature. A lowering of your core body temperature by just 2°C causes hypothermia.
- Is there a foolproof hangover cure? No, sorry there isn't one. General advice is to drink plenty of water, possibly even a sports drink to rebalance those electrolytes and go back to bed.
