Asthma - Old Wives Tales Print E-mail
Old Wives’ Tales (the fact and the fiction)

Old wives tales are usually thought of as silly, superstitious and useless information passed down through the generations. But the fact is that some “old wives” have actually passed on a lot of very useful knowledge over the years.

Here are some Old Wives Tales about asthma.

Coffee (TRUE)

A cup of coffee can do more than help you wake up in the mornings! Doctor Krieger from Mount Sinai Hospital in America found that coffee acts as a mild bronchodilator and helps to dilate the airways. Drinking three cups of caffeinated coffee does help you to breathe easier.

Chihuahuas! (FALSE)

Many people believe that if you own a Chihuahua the asthma is transferred to the dog. This is not true. A small dog would contribute fewer allergens than a larger dog, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction, but Chihuahuas are not a cure for asthma.
