Blood Pressure - Old Wives Tales Print E-mail

Old Wives’ Tales (the fact and the fiction)

Old wives tales are usually thought of as silly, superstitious and useless information passed down through the generations. But the fact is that some “old wives” have actually passed on a lot of very useful knowledge over the years.

Here are some Old Wives Tales about blood pressure.

Leeks and Onions (FALSE)

Leeks and onions were traditionally used to treat high blood pressure. There is no scientific data to prove this.

Monday is a dangerous day (TRUE)

Our blood pressure soars on Monday mornings with the stress of going back to work. This increases the risk of heart attacks by 20%.

Garlic (MAYBE)

Many people think that garlic wards off high blood pressure. This could help as garlic is known to help the body in many ways.
